When it comes to traditional education and career paths, we are told to get a degree, fall into work and drive those cogs until the day we can retire – how depressing.
This is a kind of linear pattern.
Life to an extent is linear in that there is a start and there is an end, but there are so many variants in-between that the journey is far from that truth.
When many individuals go into business, it’s easy to treat your business in a linear form – essentially if I do A I’ll get B.
It’s more like to get B, I have to go backwards and forwards through the alphabet until something works!
We cannot just be ONE role in our business, we have to multiply ourselves.
We’ll have our strengths and we SHOULD stick to them, however, it does the world of good to each business owner to broaden their understanding.
Just because you don’t like or want to do sales, marketing and 101 other things, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t understand them for the sake of your business. We can’t just bury ourselves in the knowledge of what we do, and what we do only.
Linear education will teach us many things about the service we offer our clients.
Non-linear education will teach us many things in-context about the service we offer our clients.
The difference ‘in-context’ will allow us to take a birds-eye view of our business and understand more about what we need to do and creative ways to tackle problems.
Just because you don’t have clients, it may not JUST be your marketing – it could be your own mindset or belief in your business and path.
Just because you can’t keep the best staff, it may not JUST be your hiring strategy – it could be your training procedures.
Non-linear education allows us to discover things beyond our current understanding – so get reading as many books and watching as many different types of videos as possible.
It also allows us to get a rounded approach to the truth…meaning you enter opportunities with less scepticism and more positivity, which will bring results.
For those that have read this far, congrats…here’s a treat.
Lately, I’ve downloaded an app called Blinklist – amazing. For those who don’t have time to read books, this app actually sums up MANY books from self-help to business direction. It allows you to get a broad understanding and discover the areas you need help in the most.
Well worth it.
